The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the American Civil War. This workshop begins in Washington, DC. A brief introduction will provide a leadership overview and historic background essential to the Battle of Bull Run. This is designed to help them gain a clearer understanding of the actual battle, key leaders, and the events leading up to it. A battlefield historian and leadership facilitator will guide the group on the battlefield describing the actual events and illustrating various leadership principles. This battle is particularly interesting to analyze because both armies or “organizations” were not yet fully developed and their leaders were untested. The day will conclude with a group discussion about the concepts and principles discussed throughout the day. We will further consider how these leadership lessons apply to us as we face the challenges of a complex, fast paced, ever changing world where the actions of leaders can make all the difference. As we return to Washington, we will make a brief stop at the Lincoln Memorial where the evolution of strategic vision is discussed, using Lincoln himself as a backdrop.
